Actually we don't need it, but your friends might need it to identify you.
Your real name is a convenient way for your friends to assure that they are adding the right user as a friend.
It will also make many other tasks easier to your friends, like adding a new debt or reading the balance.
Choose whatever name you like as long as you are not confusing your friends to much.
